Six Ways to Experience Crater Lake National Park
Published on March 28, 2023
Crater Lake is a true Oregon treasure, shining as the state’s only National Park and one of the world’s deepest lakes—famous for its deep blue color and crystal-clear water. Visitors come to Crater Lake National Park to enjoy its stunning views, unique geological features, and various recreational activities. Lucky for owners at Caldera Springs, this natural wonder is a short two hours away—an incredible day trip getaway that puts Oregon’s beauty on full display.
Here are our top six ways to maximize your next visit to Crater Lake.
1. Drive Around the Rim Road
The Rim Road is a scenic drive that loops around the entire lake, providing visitors with breathtaking views of the lake and surrounding mountains. There are several pullouts and overlooks along the way where visitors can stop and take in the views, as well as several hiking trails that lead off from the road.
2. Take a Boat Tour
Boat tours of Crater Lake are available during the summer months and offer a unique, up-close perspective of the lake. One of the trip’s stops is Wizard Island, a cinder cone located in the middle of the lake, where they can hike to the summit for stunning panoramic views.
3. Hike One of the Many Trails
Crater Lake National Park has over 90 miles of hiking trails that range from easy walks to strenuous hikes. Some of the most popular trails include the Cleetwood Cove Trail, which leads down to the lake’s shore, and the Garfield Peak Trail, which offers stunning views of the lake from above.
4. Snowshoe or Cross-country Ski
During the winter months, Crater Lake is a snowy wonderland, making it a popular destination for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. Visitors can rent equipment and explore the park’s winter wonderland on their own or join a ranger-led snowshoe hike.
5. Watch the Stars at Night
Crater Lake National Park is a designated Dark Sky Park, which means that it has minimal light pollution and offers some of the best stargazing opportunities in the country. On a clear night, you can see the Milky Way, shooting stars, and other celestial wonders.
6. Visit the Historic Crater Lake Lodge
The Crater Lake Lodge is a historic building that has been around since 1915. It offers stunning views of the lake and is a great place to grab a meal or a drink while taking in the scenery. The lodge also has a gift shop where you can purchase souvenirs to remember your visit—it will be one you’ll never want to forget.
Returning to the comforts of Caldera Springs is a welcome way to end your exploration—and begin planning for the next one. With so many incredible Oregon gems nearby and onsite, ownership at Caldera Springs means your adventure never has to end.
