Creating the Ideal Mountain Retreat with Stacey Weaver

Published on January 30, 2025

As Caldera Springs continues to evolve as Central Oregon’s premier residential resort communities, home design in the area continues to evolve and transform. Architectural styles throughout the region combine modern luxury and rustic charm, always allowing the surrounding nature to take center stage. We sat down with leading local builder Stacey Weaver, Managing Director of Pahlisch Select, to discuss the latest trends in mountain home design, from modern interpretations of traditional styles to innovative sustainable features. Here’s what she had to share about creating the perfect mountain retreat in Caldera Springs.

What trends are people seeking in their Caldera Springs home?

Clients truly find the outdoors and nature to be part of the Caldera Springs experience and want to feel the elements within their living spaces. When we work with clients considering a new home in Caldera Springs, bringing together an array of visual and tactile elements while maintaining coziness is essential.

How are you modernizing the traditional mountain homes of Central Oregon?

While Central Oregon has long been known for its mountain-style homes, we’re seeing a shift toward fresh modern elements with a Scandinavian mountain approach. This includes incorporating larger windows, cleaner lines, and a simplistic touch of light wood tones—all creating a style that emulates modesty and harmony.

Are cabin-style homes still in demand and if so, how are they evolving?

While clients love the historical aspects of traditional cabins—think knotty alder, pine, and big round timber logs—building them in today’s market takes a different approach. Modern cabin design emphasizes being ‘simple, elegant, and useful’ while maintaining a smaller footprint than a typical home.

How are designs incorporating the outdoors and surrounding nature into the living experience?

Bringing the outside in manifests in a wealth of creative ways. We use natural earth tones to warm spaces, pairing them with oversized window corridors that place nature front and center in great rooms, primary suites, and throughout the home. The key is creating connectivity between each space and nature, ensuring views and interaction opportunities from anywhere in the home.

What unique features have people recently been seeking? What are some architectural and design moments you’ve incorporated?

Home design preferences have evolved significantly over the decades. While archways and rounded corners once signified luxury, today’s preferred style features square corners, large cased openings, high vaulted ceilings, beam work, and floor-to-ceiling windows.

What materials are in most demand?

Wood is undoubtedly the star. From beams to countertop components, cabinets and wall accents—wood’s aesthetic creates an intentional grounding effect. It delivers harmony and peace, transforming homes into healing sanctuaries that connect with nature.

What special features, such as sustainable elements and home automation, are owners incorporating?

Today’s homeowners prioritize quality products that stand the test of time while offering convenience without complications. Home automation has evolved significantly from its early days when complex systems often frustrated users. Now, it’s an expected feature, enhancing daily living through automated blinds, appliances, security systems and user-friendly lighting and plumbing features.
