The Perfect Lakeside Proposal at Caldera Springs

Matt first noticed the bridge near Lake House during a family visit to Caldera Springs in September 2025, months before he returned to propose to Nayeli. Ponderosa pines bordered the water, the golf course opened beyond the trees and the mountains gave the scene the distinctly Central Oregon character he knew she would love.

Several months later, Nayeli arrived for her first visit to Sunriver, unaware that Matt had planned the evening around that same bridge. Caldera Springs, a private residential resort community near Sunriver Resort, offered both the setting he remembered and the quiet, intimate atmosphere Nayeli had always hoped for.

Why Caldera Springs Became the Proposal Location

“When I was there last September with my family, I walked out to the bridge and had that moment of knowing it was the perfect place to propose,” Matt said. “The setting felt so peaceful and meaningful, and I could immediately picture how much Nayeli would love it.”

The bridge sits near Lake House, Caldera Springs’ waterfront dining and gathering place overlooking Obsidian Lake, with Mt. Bachelor visible in the distance.

Planning the Surprise Near Lake House

Photographer Tom Lebsack of MOT Photography treats a proposal like a production. “Matt reached out about two months before he proposed, and from that first call I could tell he wanted every detail right,” Tom says. “My job is to make sure the person popping the question knows exactly what to do, down to the smallest detail, so all they have to think about in the moment is the person in front of them.”

The two of them worked through every variable: where Nayeli would stand, how the light would fall at that exact hour, how Matt would hold the ring box, and what he would say to lead her onto the bridge without tipping her off. Matt even told Nayeli their dinner reservation at Lake House was at 7 when it was really at 8, leaving enough time for the proposal and photos.

Kelly Doohan, Director of Recreation & Aquatics at Caldera Springs, helped Tom and Matt confirm the plan would work, and the Lake House staff handled the rest. 

The Proposal Plan

Tom’s original plan kept him out of sight while the couple approached the bridge. He changed course the day before. He borrowed a golf bag and a set of clubs, easy to find with Caldera Links and The Outpost steps from Lake House, and posed as a golfer just feet from Matt and Nayeli as they walked toward the water. “Sometimes hiding in plain sight works better than actually hiding,” he says. The disguise placed him only a few feet away as Matt and Nayeli approached, without giving away what was about to happen.

The bridge gave Matt a natural reason to lead Nayeli toward the center of the lake. Early-evening light fell across the water, and the structure framed the couple from both directions. Tom remembers the symmetry of the scene, with the couple at the center of the bridge and Caldera Springs rising behind them.

Nayeli remembers the feeling more than any single detail.

“The most memorable part of the proposal was how warm and intimate it felt,” Nayeli said. “I never wanted the proposal to happen in a super crowded place, so having that peaceful, beautiful space made it feel personal.”

The setting also suited the couple. “We both love nature and going on hikes, so being outside in a setting like that just made it feel even more right for us,” she said.

Matt asked, and Nayeli said yes!

Engagement Photos Around Lake House and Caldera Links

The couple moved through the Lake House grounds at golden hour, from the dock over the water to the tall grass along the shoreline, with Caldera Links and the surrounding pines framing every shot. “The Lake House area of Caldera Springs is stunning,” Tom says. “A small lake, the bridge, green trees, rolling landscape, and that gorgeous Central Oregon light at sunset. It’s the perfect recipe for great photos.”

“My favorite image is of Nayeli wrapped up in Matt’s arms,” Tom said. “She was beaming, and it’s the type of smile you can’t help but smile back at.”

The Celebration Continued Inside Lake House

Dinner at Lake House closed out the evening. “The staff really went above and beyond to make our dinner special,” the couple said. Lake House serves Pacific Northwest-inspired fare with views of Obsidian Lake and Mt. Bachelor beyond the windows, and the restaurant welcomes everything from date nights to full private events. “They pulled out all the stops,” Tom adds.

A Central Oregon Destination They Plan to Revisit

The evening gave Matt and Nayeli a new reason to return to Central Oregon.

“Caldera Springs now holds such a special memory for both of us, and it already feels like a place we’d want to come back to for future celebrations,” they said.
